The Blues Estafette 1997

Willie Clayton

Willie Clayton was born in 1956 in Indianola, Mississippi, the heart of the Delta. He grew up listening to the blues - people who lived there like Lowell Fulson, Slim Harpo and Jimmy Reed and to all the plays on the juke box in his parent's back room cafe. He started singing at the age of seven and has continued that momentum making records for 28 of his 41 years.

Willie got his start after moving to Chicago in 1971, getting a job at the Burning Spear which was owned by Pervis Spann. Pervis Spann became his manager and took him to Memphis where he started recording for Pawn in 1973. Pawn was distributed by London Records, a subsidiary of Hi Records, and through this connection Willie began to work with Willie Mitchell who became one of his biggest influences and helped him more than anyone in the business.

Willie Clayton has recorded three CD's - "Let's Get Together" in 1993, "Ace In The Hole" in 1995, and has a new release, "Chapter One". His big hit is "Three People Sleeping In My Bed." He has performed at the 7th North Alabama Down Home Rhythm & Blues Festival at Huntsville.
