PART ONE

LYRIC TRANSCRIPTIONS OF PRE-WAR BLUES AND GOSPEL RECORDS

The fourth edition of the book, BLUES AND GOSPEL RECORDS 1890-1943, by R M W Dixon, John Godrich and Howard Rye, Oxford University Press, 1987, is, as the name suggests, a list of (largely) pre-war titles issued on 78 rpm records.

Following the various editions of this book, Johnny Parth of Vienna, with the help of collectors world-wide, has issued on his Document CD label all available titles, with the exception of a few artistes whose complete work is already available. This amounts to around 700 CDs - some 16,000 titles! He includes some post-war material, but this is not a significant proportion.

I have taken on the task of transcribing the lyrics from these CDs with help from my checking team, Richard Metson, Bernard Holland and latterly John Newman (having started in the vinyl era with all LPs issued on the US Yazoo label partly without help), and the books are listed below. The Document series omits items already in the Yazoo books, apart from a few cases where there are Parts I and II or several takes of a title, only one being in Yazoo. In such cases all items are in the Document books. The series itself will run to something between twelve and twenty volumes.

PART TWO - COMPOSER CREDITS – AN ATTEMPT TO GARNER ALL COMPOSER CREDITS FROM THE LABELS OF RECORDS NOTED IN 'BLUES AND GOSPEL RECORDS 1890-1943'.

ISSUE No 8, April 5 2000 (updating No 7 of October 1999)

TITLES – 18,000 approx.

COMPOSER CREDITS – over 3600 (up from 1717 last time.)

NEXT ISSUE – NONE. This is the last issue and only contains this introductory part for anyone who might chance upon the site. There has been no response and no interest, to my knowledge, in the site, but I shall keep going with the work. Every six months or so I shall send an update by e-mail of the whole list to those who request this and send an e-mail address. They need not apply more than once, as I shall keep the e-mail address list, and send the update without being asked.

The main change in the list this time is that the data from Max Vreede's Paramount book has been added, along with a few entries from labels displayed on the Internet in conjunction with auction lists. This latter source was suggested by Chris Smith, and the bulk of the sites are fed to me by Howard Rye. There are few Internet entries so far because I am collecting and sorting by artiste/title, and it would be tedious to enter each as it appears.

All other information will now be in the e-mail issue.
